What To Wear For Your California Elopement

Since you’ve already kicked tradition to the curb, you can also do the same with your outfits! I love this topic because this is where you can really get creative and express yourselves, your love for each other, and yourself. There are a few practical things to keep in mind when picking out your elopement outfits, like footwear and time of year.

Let’s start with the practical: location matters. California is not always 72 and sunny, no not even LA, despite what Hollywood wants you to think. My first time hiking Yosemite NP I was pretty much in full ski gear while lots of tourists rolled up in Mustang convertibles and flip flops. It was snowing! California has a ton of micro-climates, so I always recommend layers. Layers, layers, and more layers. A jean jacket studded with beads, or a leather fringe bolero jacket in Joshua Tree can actually add to your outfit. (Peep the photos below!). Vintage fur jackets (these have always been from the grandparents so don’t hate for the fur) in the Redwoods have kept brides and guests warm! It all really depends on your style. But the main takeaway to be sure you are comfortable, is to add at least a coat or a jacket to make sure you are warm in the early hours or the evening. A Patagucci jacket never hurt nobody either!

Location Location Location. Footwear can make or break your comfort and how you are feeling about doing some of the activities you’ve chosen for your elopement. If you are hiking, bring your favorite hiking boots or treat yourself to a pair of Blundstones or new hiking boots. I personally love Merrells, but I def suggest that you go and try on your own boots because everyone has unique feet, just like snowflakes!

If you’re doing more of an urban elopement or will have access to your car, a fun pair of sneakers, high tops, or even hand painted Vans (a gift from my sister to my husband for our wedding) can add some color or a pop to funk up the outfit a bit. Or you can do a fun white heeled boot! Basically, there is no right or wrong answer, but whatever fits your elopement day and your personal style is the right decision! Also, feel free to bring 2 pairs of shoes! You can hike in one and then get photos in another.

Okay, now moving from the practical to the personal style. This is where you can really go off in any direction you want. I love the idea of adding color to your dress or suit. And you do not need to wear a traditional wedding dress, you could do a fitted tux, or a 2 piece dress, or a dress you feel like you’d wear in the future!

This bride had a local tailor make her a custom tux inspired outfit.

Love the teal suit by Hugo Boss on this groom.

The point is to have fun and incorporate a little bit of your style in your wedding! Make it fun, make it fash-un. I would say comfort reigns supreme when looking for your wedding outfit.
